Deputy Brian Keith Tephford

Deputy Brian Tephford
February 19, 1972 - November 12, 2006

Deputy Brian Tephford, 34, a six-year veteran of the Broward Sheriff's Office (BSO), died after being shot during a traffic stop while working a special detail in Tamarac. Responding to Deputy Tephford's call for back-up, Deputy Corey Carbocci arrived on-scene to assist. Shortly thereafter, both deputies were fired upon. Neither deputy had a chance to fire his weapon. Deputy Carbocci is expected to make a full recovery.

Following graduation from the 144th Corrections Academy, Deputy Tephford was sworn-in as a BSO detention deputy sheriff in March 2001. Deputy Tephford served in the Main Jail and then transferred to the Department of Law Enforcement as a cadet. He graduated from the 216th Academy in April 2003 and took the oath as a law enforcement deputy sheriff in May 2003.

Assigned to patrol in BSO’s District 7, the City of Tamarac, Deputy Tephford was also a member of BSO's Field Force. He was named Employee-of-the-Month in December 2005, and in January 2003, Sheriff Jenne presented him with BSO's prestigious Lifesaving Award for saving an inmate from suicide.

Deputy Tephford was performing extra duty at the Versailles Gardens condominium, in Tamarac, when he stopped two suspicious vehicles at approximately 11:00 pm. Deputy Tephford called for an additional unit to assist him. After the second unit arrived, the suspects approached Deputy Tephford's patrol car and opened fire, striking both deputies. Deputy Tephford was sitting in his patrol car running the suspects on the computer when he was shot.

Both deputies were taken to the Broward General Medical Center, where Deputy Tephford died from his wounds an hour later. The second deputy sustained a non life threatening gunshot wound.

Both assailants were arrested a short time later.

Deputy Tephford had served with the Broward County Sheriff's Office for 6 years. He is survived by his three children.

Deputy Tephford leaves behind a 4-year old daughter and young twins. The Deputy Brian Tephford Memorial Fund has been established at the Sheriff’s Foundation of Broward County. The fund will be used to create a trust account to be managed outside the foundation to help meet the educational needs of his children.

Some relatives and neighbors were just learning Sunday that Broward Sheriff's Deputy Brian Tephford had died, the victim of gunfire during a traffic stop in Tamarac, and that Deputy Corey Carbocci had been shot but was still alive. They acknowledged the facts, but the emotional truth was still sinking in. Tephford had been working a special detail, helping to keep a condo community safe at night, when he and Carbocci, whom he'd called for backup, were attacked.
